Special Olympics Part of School Sports Track and Field Championships

The 2007 School Sports Track and Field Championships are taking place Saturday, May 26, in Mount Pearl. The Track and Field Championships are hosted annually however this year�s competition holds extra significance. These championships will be the first time that individuals with an intellectual disability have competed in a Special Olympics division.

"Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador are thrilled to have our athletes be part of this competition. We continue to try and find our athletes additional competitive opportunities so what better place for them to compete than along side their classmates." says John Byrne, Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador, Executive Director. "We look forward to seeing our athletes compete this weekend and for the teachers and coaches from across the province to see what athletes with an intellectual disability are capable of. We hope that this year�s competition will lead to more schools becoming involved next year and more individuals with an intellectual disability having the chance to train, compete and achieve through sport. "

The competition will be starting 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at the Mount Pearl Track and Field Complex. Special Olympics athletes will be competing in the 100m, 200m, standing long jump and shot put.

Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador is dedicated to enriching the lives of Newfoundlanders and Labradoreans with an intellectual disability through sport.   It is a provincial not-for-profit grassroots organization that provides sport training and competition opportunities for over 450 athletes of all ages and abilities. There are currently 12 community-based clubs that offer sport programs. Through sport Special Olympics offers athletes and families a sense of achievement and an opportunity to excel as they take on leadership roles within their community
