Comprehensive Exhibition of Anne Meredith Barry's Work to Open at The Rooms

The work of one of Canadas finest printmakers, Anne Meredith Barry, will be displayed to the people of the province, beginning on Friday, May 11 when Anne Meredith Barry: Natural Energies opens at The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. This exhibition, the first comprehensive exhibition of Anne Meredith Barry's work, is a major retrospective consisting of 90 works created since 1982.

"The work of Anne Meredith Barry is inseparable from this province and her images reflect the raw environment of Newfoundland the provinces seascapes and landscapes, its weather and geology in vibrant and distinctive ways that continue to define Barry as a renowned and internationally recognized artist," commented Shauna McCabe, director of The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. "Her work offers memorable images that both symbolize and transcend this province, the place Barry called home for many years, and where she contributed greatly to the arts community and to its collaborative nature."

Guest curated by Patricia Grattan, Natural Energies brings together large-scale paintings, prints, artist's books, and sculptural objects, and reflects major bodies of work such as the Travelling Vests, Sky Fans, the Whale Song paintings, Gros Morne Summer Journals and Artist's Coats, a series of large collages. Sketchbooks and other materials integrated within the exhibition provide a sense of the artists creative process and working methods. Additionally, a well-illustrated publication traces the artists life and the development of her work, examining her place in Canadian art.

Anne Meredith Barry (1931-2003), whose landscape imagery reached new heights after she moved from Toronto to the small outport of St. Michael's on the provinces Southern Shore, was already well-known for her Canadian landscape depictions, as well as for her innovative teaching. Finding new inspiration in Newfoundland and Labrador, she described her work as a personal response to the ever-changing natural environment and the forces of beauty and destruction visible outside her studio window.

This exhibition is organized by The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery with the support of The Department of Canadian Heritage through the Museums Assistance Program, the Canada Council for the Arts, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Anne Meredith Barry: Natural Energies runs until September 30, 2007. The exhibit opens on at 8:00 pm on Friday, May 11 at The Rooms with a public reception.
