School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will sponsor the Girls Provincial Ball Hockey Championships this coming weekend. Eight teams will converge on Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista, hoping to leave with the coveted championship banner.

Teams will be set up in two divisions, playing a round robin format. The top two teams from each division advance to the playoffs. The tournament will kick off at 10:30 a.m., Friday.

Teams entered in the tournament in Division 1 include Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown) and Mushuau Innu Natuashish School. Division 2 consists of St. Joseph�s Academy (Lamaline), Stephenville High, Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) and the host, Discovery Collegiate.

The semi-final games are scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 12:45 p.m. Saturday. The winning teams will play in the championship game at 2:30 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.
