The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Three Provincial Girls Basketball and
Two Provincial Boys Hockey Championships This Weekend

Five provincial high school champions will be declared this coming weekend as School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador continues with its winter schedule. The girls will be involved in three basketball finals, while two boys hockey tournaments are also taking place.

The Fair Play Girls Basketball tournament is being hosted by Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts. Teams contesting the female title include, the host, Ascension Collegiate, Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista), Clarenville High and Stephenville High in the Blue Division. In the Gold Division, Elwood High (Deer Lake), Fitzgerald Academy (English Hr. West), J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate) and Mobile High. Games get underway 3:00 p.m Thursday and continuing all day Friday. The crossovers are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

St. Lawrence Academy is the host school for the Girls 2A Basketball Provincials. Eight teams will be competing for top honours in a two-division format. In the Blue Division, St. Lawrence Academy, Stella Maris Academy (Trepassey), St. Mark�s High (Kings Cove) and St. Mary�s All Grade (Mary�s Harbour) will square off. Seeing action in the White Division will be Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn). The crossovers are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with the championship game to be played at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Carbonear Collegiate is the host school for the Girls 3A Basketball event. Six teams will play in a two- division round robin format starting 6:00 p.m., Thursday. Playing in the Maroon Division will be Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels, St. Catherine�s Eagles (Mount Carmel) and Bay Verte Ravens. In the White Division teams include, Baltimore Broncos (Ferryland) Menihek High Magic (Labrador City) and Piccadilly Pirates. Round robin games will be played throughout Thursday evening and all day Friday. The crossover games will be played on Saturday morning and the championship game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Saturday.

Roncalli Central High in Port Saunders is the host school for the Boys 3A Hockey Provincials. Eight teams will be vying for the provincial banner. Division A will see action from Roncalli High (Port Saunders), J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Botwood Collegiate and Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony). Facing off in Division B will be Gros Morne Academy (Rocky Hr.), Holy Trinity High (Torbay), Indian River High (Springdale) and Fogo
Island Academy. Games get underway 9 a.m. Thursday morning and continue throughout
Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each division advance to the semi-finals scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The championship game features the two winning teams at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday with the awards ceremony taking place at 3:30 p.m.

O�Donel High in Mount Pearl is the host school for the Boys 4A Hockey provincials. The championship banner, as well as the Boyle Trophy is on the line at this tournament. Games will be played at the Glacier and the Smallwood Arena in Mount Pearl. Facing off in Division A will be O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Gonzaga High (St. John�s), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Clarenville High. In Division B - Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), St. Kevin�s High (Goulds), Corner Brook High and Discovery Collegiate (Bonavista). The tournament starts at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Glacier and continues throughout Thursday and Friday. A skills competition is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the Glacier and the two crossover games will be played 9:00 a.m, Saturday at both the Smallwood Arena and the Glacier. The championship game set to go at 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the Glacier.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.
