The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Girls 4A and Boys 2A, 3A, 4A, Fair Play and Small Schools Basketball Tournaments Held This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador has a very busy weekend coming up. Six Basketball titles are on the line as high school teams take to the hard court in their season finals. A total of 42 teams will be competing in the six tournaments.

Valmont Academy in Kings Point is the host school for the 2A Boys Basketball Provincial. Eight teams will compete in a two division round robin format. Division A will feature St. Lawrence Academy, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), the host, Valmont Academy and Random Island Academy. Competing in Division B will be Dunne Memorial Academy (St. Mary�s), Grandys River Collegiate (Burnt Islands), Mountain Field Academy (Forteau) and Central Representative. Games get underway 11:00 a.m. Thursday and run throughout Thursday and Friday. The top two teams from each division in the round robin advance to the semi-finals Saturday morning with the winners facing off in the championship game at 1:00 p.m.

Tricentia Academy in Arnolds Cove is the host school for the 3A Boys Tournament. The host will play in Division A with Mobile High, Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville) and Bay D�Espoir Academy. Facing off in division B will be Elwood High (Deer Lake), Mehihek High (Labrador City), Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Pasadena Academy. Games get underway at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday with the final round robin game scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon will see the top teams battling for a championship game spot. The championship game is set for 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts is hosting the biggest tournament of the weekend - 10 team Fair Play Boys Tournament. Teams have been divided into two pools. Pool A will consist of Carbonear Collegiate, Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), Mobile Central High, Lewisporte Collegiate and Marystown High. Pool B teams include St. Catherine�s Academy, Ascension Collegiate, Crescent Collegiate (Blaketown), Clarenville High and Stella Maris High (Trepassey). A total of 20 preliminary games will be played, beginning 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday and continuing throughout Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The top teams advance to the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon. The championship game will go at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

The 4A Boys and 4A Girls tournaments being hosted by Gonzaga High (St. John�s) and Mount Pearl Sr. High respectively, and being co-hosted by Memorial. School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador has coordinated the 4A tournaments to coincide with the CIS Womens Championships, which Memorial is hosting this weekend. It will be a great opportunity for the top high school basketball players in the province to see the top womens university players in the country.

The 4A Boys event will feature Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John�s), Laval High (Placentia) Corner Brook High and O�Donel High (Mount Pearl) in the White Division. In the Black Division St. Catherine�s Academy (Mount Carmel), Gonzaga High , Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls) and Fatima Academy (St. Brides) will square off. Games get underway at 3:45 a.m. Thursday at Gonzaga and 5:15 p.m. at MUN. All games Friday will be played at Gonzaga starting at 10:30 a.m.. Saturday�s round robin games will be played at 10:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. at both Gonzaga and Holy Heart. Semi-finals will take place at MUN at 5:30p.m. and 7:15 p.m.. The championship game will be played at 11:00 a.m. at the MUN gym.

The 4A Girls event will feature St. Kevin�s High (Goulds), Gonzaga High, Mobile High and Roncalli High (Avondale) in Division A. Battling it out in Division B will be Laval High, Holy Heart High, Mount Pearl Senior High and Gander Collegiate. Games get underway at Mount Pearl Senior High 1:45 p.m. Thursday and continue at Mount Pearl on Friday. Saturday�s final round robin games will be played at both Mount Pearl Senior High and O�Donel High at 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on Saturday. The semi-finals take place at 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Mount Pearl. The winners meet in the championship game at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at the Memorial Field House.

In conjunction with the CIS Womens Tournament, Memorial is hosting an athletes social Friday evening, where representatives of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, Memorial, Basketball Canada will be present. The high school championships banners will be presented during the bronze medal game Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Banner, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted Championship Banner.
