Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council

A Corner Brook poet/editor is the latest appointment to the board of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC).

The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Tourism, Culture and Recreation Minister, announced the appointment of Randall Maggs (literary arts) today. Mr. Maggs is appointed for a three-year term. NLAC board members represent individuals whose expertise is necessary to fulfill the goals and objectives of the council.

"Supporting creative people and bringing stability to the conditions under which they work is a key building block to celebrating our identity and fostering creativity," said Minister Hedderson. "Mr. Maggs is an excellent addition to the board and is a strong contributor to the arts. I look forward to working with the members of the board of directors as they implement their strategic plan and strengthen their vital support to our artists."

Mr. Maggs is a professor of literature at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University of Newfoundland, the artistic director of Newfoundlands March Hare literary festival, and a poet and editor. His work has been widely published, most recently appearing in The Way It Looks from Here: Contemporary Canadian Writing on Sports (Random House, 2004) and Poetry Ireland Review (2006). His new collection of poetry, Night Work: The Sawchuk Poems (Brick Books), will be launched at the March Hare festival in 2008.

Other members of the NLAC board include: John Doyle, St. Johns (film); Charlotte Jones, Corner Brook (visual arts); Margaret Best, St. Johns (visual arts); Carmelita McGrath, St. Johns, (literary arts); Mara Noftall, St. Johns (dance); Kim Wiseman, Gander (music); Mary Walsh, St. Johns (theatre); Brent Meade (government representative) and Eleanor Dawson (government representative).
