Government Congratulates Gordon Pinsent on Canadas Walk of Fame Honour

Gordon Pinsents induction into Canadas Walk of Fame for his impact on Canadas cultural heritage pays tribute to a Newfoundland and Labrador artist who has enjoyed exceptional creative and commercial success.

Mr. Pinsent has dedicated much of his career to sharing compelling Newfoundland and Labrador stories with the rest of Canada and the world, said the Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador. His artistic talent has made him one of our provinces preeminent cultural icons, and I can think of no Canadian more deserving of a star on Canadas Walk of Fame. His contribution to Canadas cultural heritage has been nothing short of outstanding. His incredible work continues to weave the cultural heritage of this province into that of all of Canada. On behalf of the province, I extend sincerest congratulations on this recognition that is so deserved.

His wide-ranging career includes stage, film, television and radio, as well as contributions as a playwright, author and director, all of which have made important contributions to the cultural landscape of Newfoundland and Labrador and also that of Canada, said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Mr. Pinsent has long been recognized for his talents and achievements and it is fitting that his star takes its rightful place on Canadas Walk of Fame.

Annual Walk of Fame inductees are determined by a committee that makes its selections from a list of nominations received from the general public. Mr. Pinsents Walk of Fame star and the stars of seven other inductees will be unveiled at a June 9 Gala at the Hummingbird Centre in Toronto.

On July 12, 2005, on the occasion of his 75th birthday the province paid its own tribute to Mr. Pinsent by renaming the Grand Falls Windsor Arts and Culture Centre the Gordon Pinsent Centre for the Arts. This represented the first time the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador had renamed an arts and culture centre in the province.
