Province Promoting Winter Tourism at Home
This winter theres No Place Like Home,
as more and more Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are coming to realize.
Winter is a great season of excitement, adventure and romance, and our
No Place Like Home campaign is designed to remind us of the
tourism opportunities we have right here, said the Honourable Tom
Hedderson, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, who officially
launched the campaign at My Newfoundland Adventures in Steady Brook
today. We are certainly getting a traditional winter this season, and
I encourage everyone to seek out and visit our excellent tourism
operators across the province to take advantage of a variety of packages
that range from an extreme high-energy winter adventure to a quiet
romantic winter getaway.
As part of the No Place Like Home campaign, households throughout
Newfoundland and Labrador are receiving a brochure styled as a series of
eye-catching postcards and value coupons for winter getaway packages.
Radio ads have already begun to encourage listeners to take part in a
winter adventure by going to the Web site
www.NoPlaceLikeHome.Travel
which also features getaway packages.
Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador (HNL) applauds the provinces
winter tourism campaign. We are delighted that industry and government
are working together to encourage people to enjoy the many winter
activities that our beautiful province has to offer, said HNL President
Bruce Sparkes. As an avid snowmobiler, I can attest to the quality,
beauty and brilliance of winter in Newfoundland and Labrador and
encourage everyone to experience the season for themselves.
While we encourage our own citizens to take advantage of the great
opportunities we have for travel and adventure, Newfoundland and
Labrador is enjoying strong growth in the tourism sector, said Minister
Hedderson. We have every expectation that this growth will continue
thanks to ongoing innovative efforts and the Provincial Governments
investment of more than $30 million to market and support the industry
in the past three years. In 2006 we had nearly 500,000 non-resident
visitors to the province, an increase of just over five per cent from
the previous year and their expenditures have increased by more than
eight per cent to $365 million over the same period.
