The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Wrestling and Badminton Tournaments to be Held This Weekend

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador will crown new provincial champions this weekend - teams and individuals competing in badminton and wrestling will be vying for championship banners and golds, silver and bronze medals.

Carbonear Collegiate is the host school for the Provincial High School Wrestling Championships. Both male and female team champions will be declared based on the accumulation of points from each of the 18 weight classes. Teams competing include the host, Carbonear Collegiate, Templeton Collegiate (Gillams), St. James High (Port aux Basques), Stephenville High, Corner Brook High, and Holy Trinity High (Torbay). The official weigh in is set for 5 - 6 p.m on Friday with matches beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Glovertown Academy is the host school for the 3A Provincial Badminton championships. Six schools will compete in a round robin format to determine the team champions. Each encounter in the team competition will consist of five matches: girls singles, boys singles, girls doubles, boys doubles and mixed doubles. The winner of three out of five wins the encounter. The top team after the round robin receives a bye to the final. The second and third place teams play off to determine the other finalist. The winner of the team competition will win the championship banner, as well as gold medals. The first encounter is scheduled for Friday morning. Teams involved in the team competition include Glovertown Academy, Holy Name of Mary (Lawn), Dorset Collegiate (Pilleys Island), Belanger Memorial (Doyles), Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove) and Lake Melville Schools (North West River).

The individual competition is scheduled for Saturday and will feature athletes from the above schools, as well as Fortune Bay Academy. Individual champions will be declared in boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, are sponsoring the Sportsmanship First Program. Each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner will also receive the coveted Championship Banner. Individual gold, silver and bronze will be awarded to the individual winners.
