Fifty-six of the top players in Atlantic Canada will be competing hard as they vie for positions on Team Atlantic and the right to represent their home province at the indoor nationals in April. Play begins on Monday the 19th for u12 and u14 events with finals played on the 22nd. The u16 and u18 categories begin on the 22nd and run until the 25th. Players qualify for nationals based on a culmination of Atlantic points and a best winter circuit result.

Team NL captured three events at the Outdoor Atlantics in PEI with wins by Allison Day in Gu12, Daria Snow in girls u14 and Matthew Lahey in boys u12. Other players to watch include Kendrick Au who has a national u18 rank of 12, and Heather Williams who is competing in u16 and u18. Heather captured the 2005 indoor and outdoor u14 crowns.

The weeks events will begin with an u12 camp to be delivered by u12 national coach Andre Labelle from Montreal. The camp will run all day Saturday and Sunday.

About ATA

The Atlantic Tennis Alliance began operations in June of 2001. The concept was actually borne much earlier, at the Annual General Meeting of Tennis Canada in 1999. At that time, the four presidents of the Atlantic Provinces met with Tennis Canada representatives in order to address significant development issues within the region. It was felt that there were some common issues that could best be dealt with if the region were to act as a collective.

Over the ensuing year, there was discussion within each of the provincial associations and Tennis Canada as to how to implement such an initiative. The discussions culminated in the establishment of a plan that was circulated to each provincial board, and finally resulted in the Atlantic Tennis Alliance.

The Atlantic Tennis Alliance is a partnership of the four Atlantic Provincial Associations and Tennis Canada. ATA functions as a part of each organization, with the goal of improving tennis development in the region, as well as strengthening each provincial association.
