Public Advisory:
Registered Trappers Advised of Rules for Mink-Trapping Program
The Department of
Natural Resources is advising registered trappers in the Clarenville and
Bonavista Peninsula areas that temporary permits to trap escaped mink
are required and available from the Clarenville Forestry Management
Office. Only trappers in the region who have completed the Trapper
Education Course are eligible to receive a permit.
Trapping may occur
immediately after the permit is issued and all traps must be removed by
midnight, September 23, 2007, unless otherwise notified. All carcasses
of trapped animals must be submitted to the Clarenville Forestry
Management Office by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, September 24, 2007. Trapping
will only be permitted within a five-kilometre radius of the Harcourt
Mink Farm as outlined on the permit. Trappers will be compensated $50.00
for each mink submitted.
As a precaution to
reduce accidental captures, area residents are advised to keep their
pets under extra control during this period. Pets should not be
permitted to roam freely. Pet foods, garbage or other food sources
(meats) that may attract mink should not be left outside until the
recapture effort has concluded successfully.
To obtain additional
information on the temporary permits, Harcourt-area trappers can phone
709-466-7439.
