Offering Licensed Trappers Reward for Trapping Released Mink
As part of the
continuing effort to recover mink released on Friday night from a mink
farm in Harcourt, the Department of Natural Resources will offer a
reward to licensed trappers in the region to trap mink.
Clarenville RCMP are
conducting a criminal investigation into an incident Friday night in
which approximately 5,000 mink were released into the wild.
Licensed trappers
will receive a specimen reward in the amount of $50 per mink for
trapping and turning in the animals. As of this morning, approximately
1,000 mink were still in the wild.
Providing this
reward will expedite the collection of the remaining mink and support
the farm employees and conservation officers who have been searching all
weekend, said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural
Resources. This reward initiative will be managed co-operatively
through conservation officers and agriculture officials with the
Forestry and Agrifoods Agency.
Licensed trappers
interested in taking part in the recovery of these mink should contact
the Clarenville Forestry Management Office at 709-466-7640 for
additional information.
The department is
asking residents of the local area to avoid confronting any mink they
encounter and to report any sightings to a conservation officer at the
Clarenville Forestry Management office.
