Illegal Moose Hunt Results In Conviction and Fines

Three individuals from Burgoynes Cove were recently given fines totalling $4,000 after being convicted in Provincial Court at Clarenville for several violations under the provincial Wildlife Act.

The charges were laid after conservation officers with the Department of Natural Resources, acting on a tip, set up a surveillance operation in October 2006 near the community of Hawkes Bay.

Judge Patrick Kennedy convicted Randy W. Goodyear, 52, of illegal possession of big game and possession of big game without the tags affixed. He was fined $1,000 for each offence. Beverly Goodyear, 48, was convicted and fined $1,000 for hunting more than the number of animals named in a big game licence. Henry C. Sutton, 62, was convicted and fined $1,000 for illegal possession of big game.

All three individuals are prohibited from holding a big game licence for five years. In addition, Judge Kennedy ordered a firearm, hunting equipment, a moose licence and two moose be forfeited to the Crown.

Enforcement of the rules and regulations intended to protect the provinces wildlife and forest resources is a priority for the Provincial Government. Last year, conservation officers with the Department of Natural Resources issued 999 warnings and laid 566 charges against individuals for violations of wildlife, forestry, ATV and other related regulations.
