New Book Chronicles True Stories of Avalanches in the Province

Newfoundlanders and Labradorians will have a new appreciation for our snowy environment with the release today of a new book chronicling the history of avalanches in this province.

Killer Snow: Avalanches in Newfoundland and Labrador, a new book by Department of Natural Resources geologist David Liverman, tells the stories of people in this province who have faced the terrifying power and shocking speed of an avalanche.

"This book is a tremendous contribution to the historical record of the province and to raising public awareness of the reality and danger of snow slides in certain areas of our province," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. "Its essential that people who play and work in our great outdoors are aware that avalanches do happen and they have claimed dozens of lives."

Killer Snow is a result of more than 15 years of research by Mr. Liverman and his colleagues in the provinces Geological Survey. The book was written to enhance public awareness of avalanche hazards in the province and is a must-read for anyone who participates in outdoor activities, either for work or play, or those with an interest in true local stories.

"I hope this book will raise awareness and understanding of avalanche danger in this province and perhaps help avoid further tragedies," Mr. Liverman said.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will help support the activities of the Canadian Avalanche Foundation, a registered charity. The book is published by Flanker Press and is available at most local book stores and stores where books are sold.

The official launch is open to the public and will be held at Biancas in St. Johns on Monday, March 12, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The author will be present to sign copies of the book.
