Two Convicted of Threatening Conservation Officers

Two residents of Benton were convicted in Provincial Court at Gander on January 15 on charges related to threatening the lives of two conservation officers with the Department of Natural Resources.

Brothers Raymond Cecil Smith, 47, and Edgar Smith, 42, were charged with two counts each of uttering threats against a peace officer after an incident on August 12, 2005 in the vicinity of Soulis Pond, near the community of Benton.

The conservation officers were completing a timber harvest inspection of a commercial logging operation belonging to the brothers at the time of the incident. The lives of the conservation officers were threatened when the brothers were told the operation failed the inspection due to a lack of sufficient forest fire fighting equipment and would have to be shut down.

Both men were sentenced to 60 days in custody on each charge to be served concurrently. They have also been placed on probation for 18 months and are prohibited from possessing a firearm for three years.
