Municipal Affairs
November 2, 2007Issued on behalf of Fire and
Emergency Services Newfoundland & Labrador:
Public Advisory: Post-Tropical Storm
Noel
Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and
Labrador (FES-NL) wishes to advise the public of a potential rain and
wind event over the province through the period of November 4 to 5.
Heavy rains and very strong winds are forecast to accompany
Post-Tropical Storm Noel throughout the Atlantic Region.
Hurricane Noel is expected to become an intense
post-tropical storm over the next 24 hours. It will track across western
Nova Scotia Saturday night, then across the Gulf of St Lawrence on
Sunday and through Labrador Sunday night. Despite being in a
post-tropical stage, it is expected to carry hurricane force winds as it
passes the western region of the island portion of the province and into
Labrador. Rain and wind warnings have been and will be issued by the
Atlantic storm prediction centre and the Newfoundland and Labrador
weather office. Although it is not confirmed as to what impact Noel will
have over the rest of the province, it is expected to bring high winds
for most areas.
Hurricane Noel has caused significant damage in the
Southern areas of North America and the Caribbean and its storm path
remains unpredictable. Residents of the province are reminded to observe
weather forecasts and related warning over the coming days for any
change in conditions or variation of storm path. A detailed forecast and
storm-path map can be found at //www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/hurricane/statements_e.html.
As similar events have caused significant damage
throughout the province, FES-NL reminds home and business owners to
prepare for the worst. Municipalities should ensure that all
culverts/bridges are clear of debris and blockages and should remain on
alert if the need arises. All fishing and pleasure crafts and associated
gear should be secured. Residents should use due caution and take every
opportunity to prevent damages that could be caused by flooding, storm
surges and/or high winds. Ensure rain gutters and drainage systems are
clear; sump pumps are in working order; and adequate supplies are
gathered in the event of power outages on account of high winds. For
helpful hints on being prepared, please go to

provided by Environment Canada and may be viewed online at
