Deadline Approaches for Chantal Assistance Applications

The Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services - Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL), reminds property owners affected by flooding from tropical storm Chantal that the deadline for submission of Disaster Recovery Assistance Applications is November 4, 2007.

On July 31, 2007, in excess of 150 mm of rain fell on areas of the Avalon Peninsula, significantly damaging municipal infrastructure and flooding hundreds of homes.

"We are focused on restoring municipal infrastructure and assisting homeowners to recover from the effects of the flood," said Minister Byrne. "Since Chantal, our government has worked closely with, and provided information to, the communities and the people affected by this disaster to make sure the appropriate actions are taken."

Residents may obtain Disaster Recovery Assistance Application forms from their local town council office or by contacting FES-NL at 1-888-395-5611 or by e-mail nlemo@gov.nl.ca. It is important that the applications be read thoroughly and completed with as much detail as possible by the November 4, 2007, deadline. To-date, FES-NL has received approximately 700 Disaster Recovery Assistance Applications.
