Ministers Express Condolences on the Passing of
Long-Time Municipal Leader Herbert Brett

The Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, and the Honourable John Hickey, Minister of Transportation and Works and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs, expressed deep sadness on the passing of Herbert (Herb) Brett, a long-time municipal leader and former president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities, (now known as Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador).

"It is with a heavy heart that I acknowledge the passing of a long-time municipal leader, colleague and friend," said Minister Byrne. "Mr. Brett was known for his community involvement as well as his long and distinguished career in municipal government. He was indeed a great man."

Minister Byrne noted he and Mr. Brett knew each other for more than 20 years, most notably from serving as the mayor of the Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, and in his current ministerial role.

"My memories were always of a gentleman with a vision and true dedication towards the betterment of our municipalities," said Minister Byrne. "Mr. Brett embodied the spirit of a true municipal leader, which was quite evident in many conversations weve had over the years. He gave selflessly to the cause of municipal government and through active volunteerism in his communities. He is a true, genuine Newfoundlander and Labradorian."

Mr. Brett was chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities Ferry Advisory Committee and Minister Hickey also expressed his condolences. "I have known Mr. Brett, both personally and professionally, for many years and I can say without hesitation that the province has suffered a tremendous loss with his passing. His contributions to the province and his leadership will be greatly missed."

"On behalf of the Provincial Government, Minister Hickey and I offer our most sincere condolences to his wife Iris, their children, Scott, Adam and Aimee, his brother Fred, and all his close family and friends. The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador has indeed suffered a great loss with Mr. Bretts passing," said Minister Byrne.
