Town of St. Georges to Benefit from
Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

The Town of St. Georges will extend its municipal sewer system through a contribution of more than $155,000 from the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

"Canada's New Government is getting things done for the people of St. Georges," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Through our investment of more than $50,000 we are helping the Town of St. Georges upgrade its infrastructure and improve the quality of life of its residents."

"The project in St. Georges will support the extension of the sewer system, and secure services for residents on Mission Cross Road," said the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. "The Provincial Government will continue to invest in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure residents have access to reliable and efficient services. This is a good infrastructure investment to expand sewer services, and we are pleased to work with our federal and municipal partners to support this project."

Canadas New Government will invest $52,107 in the project, with the provincial government contributing $73,471. The share for the municipality is $30,743. The project will replace the septic systems at seven households on Mission Cross Road with municipal sewer servicing.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is cost-shared with municipalities and administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada. Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, acting on behalf of communities, helps set the strategic direction of the agreement and identify priorities under the capacity-building component of the agreement.
