Channel-Port aux Basques to Benefit from
Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

The Town of Channel-Port aux Basques will undertake further extensions to its municipal sanitary and sewer systems, thanks to the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

"Canadas New Government is working with its partners to get things done for the people of Channel-Port aux Basques," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Our investment of nearly $80,000 will allow the municipality to complete this worthwhile infrastructure improvement and to help improve the quality of life of its residents."

The $236,588 project will allow the Town of Channel-Port aux Basques to continue with Phase III of its sanitary and storm sewer line upgrades by replacing those lines on Currie Avenue. Canadas New Government is contributing $78,863, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is contributing $79,651. The Town of Channel-Port aux Basques will fund the balance of $78,074.

"We are pleased to support the next phase of upgrades to the sewer system in Channel-Port aux Basques," stated the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. "The installation of new municipal infrastructure will ensure that residents of Currie Avenue will continue to receive reliable municipal services."

This project involves the installation of separate sanitary and storm sewer systems in an area of existing combined systems. In addition, some road reconstruction will be required after the excavation and backfilling of new sewer lines. This is the third phase of the work on Currie Avenue, the most recent having been completed in November of 2006.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is cost-shared with municipalities and administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada. Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador, acting on behalf of communities, helps set the strategic direction of the agreement and identify priorities under the capacity-building component of the agreement.
