Town of Placentia to Participate in Sewage Treatment Pilot Project

The Town of Placentia will participate in a pilot project for the supply and installation of a new sewage treatment system to replace the malfunctioning system currently in use in southeast Placentia.

The Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, approved the $186,000 initiative through the 2007-08 Municipal Capital Works Program. The performance of the BMS Blivet Package Sewage Treatment System will be assessed to determine the effectiveness and potential of this modern sewage treatment system as a cost-effective alternative to costly sewage treatment plants.

"Urban and rural communities around the province need effective and reliable solutions to improve aging sewage treatment systems, and to protect and preserve our environment," said Minister Byrne. "The system is a compact package sewage treatment plant system for organic waste treatment which is economical. This project will provide important data that can be used to help utilize similar systems in other areas of the province."

The BMS Blivet System will meet current environmental regulations and replace the current system which discharges untreated sewage into the ocean. The Blivet System will be manufactured in St. Brides, supporting jobs and strengthening economic development in the province.

"I am pleased that government has funded the project for Placentia and I appreciate the support of my colleague, Minister Jack Byrne," said Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia & St. Marys. "The new sewage treatment plant is a state-of-the-art facility and will satisfy a long-standing need in southeast Placentia."

Government recommitted to infrastructure development in Budget 2007-08 with funding earmarked towards strategic and sustainable capital works projects that support strong rural and urban communities in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Municipal capital works projects are cost-shared between the Provincial Government and municipalities. In 2007-08 the Municipal Capital Works Program is valued at $34.2 million, which includes an overall provincial contribution of $22.2 million.
