$1.3 Million in Road and Water System Upgrades Announced for Lewisporte

The Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, along with the Honourable Tom Rideout, MHA for the District of Lewisporte, today announced an investment of $1.3 million in support of road and water initiatives for the towns of Campbellton, Comfort Cove-Newstead, Lewisporte and Birchy Bay. The funding is made available through the $34.2 million 2007-08 Municipal Capital Works Program.

"Municipalities throughout the province face many infrastructure challenges, and we are pleased to work with them to help address issues which may exist. This is a significant investment in the Lewisporte District which will support a long-term solution to address aging, deteriorating systems and deliver improved services for residents," stated Minister Byrne.

Infrastructure investments for Lewisporte are:

  • $350,000 to Campbellton for road construction and paving to address deteriorating road conditions for the town;
  • $603,000 to Comfort Cove-Newstead for construction of a 900,000 litre steel water reservoir on the municipal water system. The new system will provide back-up storage and conserve energy, and allow better control of disinfection and system pressure;
  • $209,300 to the Town of Lewisporte for paving to address aging curb and asphalt on First Avenue, Second Avenue and Church Street; and,
  • $153,000 to Birchy Bay for the replacement of Jumper Brook Culvert. This project was funded through the 2006 Municipal Capital Works program.
  • "This is another example of government's commitment to addressing the municipal infrastructure needs of communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Rideout. "Lewisporte District has benefited quite significantly from the Municipal Capital Works Program and I am extremely pleased that funding has been made available this year for these very important projects."

    The Municipal Capital Works Program provides support to municipalities to develop a wide range of municipal infrastructure and is cost-shared between the province and municipalities. In 2007-08 the Municipal Capital Works Program is valued at $34.2 million, which includes a provincial contribution of $22.2 million.
