Daylight Savings Time to Begin March 11

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded that the province has adopted extended Daylight Savings Time which comes into effect this weekend. Clocks should be moved ahead by one hour as of 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, March 11 and the change will remain in effect until Sunday, November 4, 2007.

"The change will extend Daylight Savings Time by one month which will be consistent with other Canadian provinces and the United States," stated the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "Trade, travel and communication interests will be in sync throughout North America which is in the best interest of all residents of the province."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced the change in January 2007 to ensure the Daylight Savings Time pattern is consistent with other Canadian provinces and the United States. Daylight Savings Time is governed by the Standard Time Act which was amended in the fall 2006 session of the House of Assembly to allow this change.

The change may have an impact on automated and technology-reliant products which include calendar and scheduling applications, as well as date and time calculations. "I encourage all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to be aware of this issue and make the appropriate adjustments to ensure that the Daylight Savings Time change is reflected in their technology products," added Minister Byrne.

As minister responsible for fire and emergency services, Minister Byrne also encourages the public to maintain the biannual practice of examining and replacing batteries in safety devices. "When you change your clocks, also take the time to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they are in good working order."
