$1 Million in Water and Sewer Upgrades Announced for District of St. Barbe

The communities of Norris Point and River of Ponds in Western Newfoundland have improved their municipal water and sewer systems thanks to a combined federal, provincial and municipal contribution of $1.09 million, made under the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Infrastructure Program.

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister of Newfoundland and Labrador on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs for Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Canadas New Government is helping to ensure that our municipalities are able to improve water services and sewage collection for their residents," said Minister Hearn. "Helping municipalities improve their infrastructure systems has a direct impact on quality of life for families, and our government is pleased to help support these projects in Western Newfoundland."

"Government is committed to working with municipalities to identify shortfalls which may exist, and infrastructure which may require investment to ensure services are modern and secure," stated Minister Byrne. "Services will be strengthened and made more reliable as a result of these upgrades, and these investments will support future development in the towns of Norris Point and River of Ponds."

As a result of this funding, Norris Point received $811,497 for water and sewer upgrades to Neddies Harbour Road $270,499 from the federal government, $381,404 from the province and $159,594 from the municipality. The project will secure water main and sewage services through the installation of 1,270 metres of water main and 900 metres of sewage force main. Upgrades will maintain fire flows in the town and improve the capacity of the sewage pumping station. Work on these upgrades is 65 per cent complete.

River of Ponds has begun a $284,220 water system upgrade to include the installation of 2,300 metres of water main to improve flows and capacity for the town and provide a new line for future development. Work on the project will be completed in 2007. The federal government provided $94,740 for the project, while the provincial share was $133,583 and the municipal share $55,897.

Funding was made available through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Infrastructure Program. The program is administered provincially by the Department of Municipal Affairs, federally by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and is cost-shared with municipalities.
