Two Northern Peninsula Communities to Benefit From
the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund

The communities of Anchor Point and Rocky Harbour on the provinces Northern Peninsula will undertake improvements to their municipal water and waste water systems, thanks to federal and provincial contributions made under the Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

"Canada's new government is helping to ensure that our municipalities have modern equipment to provide their residents with clean, safe water," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA). "Helping municipalities improve their infrastructure systems has a direct impact on quality of life for families, and our government is pleased to help support these projects on the Northern Peninsula."

"Modernizing infrastructure in Anchor Point and Rocky Harbour is extremely important as we work to ensure quality services for residents throughout the province," stated the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. "We are pleased with the partnerships with federal and municipal leaders to support these water and sewer improvements which will positively impact services."

The Town of Anchor Point will upgrade its municipal water supply intake system with a contribution of $213,165 to alleviate the source of consistent blockage problems with this system. The federal government will provide $71,055 for the Anchor Point project, while the provincial share will be $100,188, with the municipality providing the remaining $41,922.

The Town of Rocky Harbour will install a new sewage treatment plant with a contribution of $582,225. The federal government will provide $194,075 for the project, while the provincial share will be $234,831, with the municipality providing the remaining $153,319. This project will greatly improve the treatment of the towns sewage and assist in having a cleaner and more appealing waterfront.

The $84 million, six-year Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada. The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Municipalities, acting on behalf of communities, helps set the strategic direction of the agreement and identify priorities under the capacity-building component of the agreement.
