Community Infrastructure Strengthened by Municipal Capital Works Investments

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador remains committed to investing and improving infrastructure in municipalities throughout the province, and today announced investments of $1.3 million dollars to improve the quality of roads.

"Investments in road work are extremely important to ensure that residents have a secure and reliable transportation network in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador," stated the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "Road improvements stimulate the economy, strengthen business and tourism sectors, and create employment opportunities. Investments in municipal infrastructure will reduce the cost of maintenance and snow clearing for towns, and provide safe and secure roads for travelers."

Funding was made available through the 2006/2007 Municipal Capital Works Program. Initiatives announced include the following:

$300,000 in support of road upgrades of streets in the Town of Channel- Port aux Basques. Work is expected to begin early in the year and will include paving and improvements for pedestrian access.

$312,000 for re-construction and paving including drainage improvements of approximately 1.02km on roads in Flatrock. Roads include Hawkins Place, Adams Place, Edwards Place, Parsons Place, Blueberry Place and Wade Road. It is expected that this project will reduce road maintenance costs by approximately $7,000 annually.

$185,000 to support road work for Bellevue-Arnolds Cove which include upgrade and resurface of Kingwell Crescent, installation of new curb, sidewalk catch basins and storm sewer.

$66,900 for upgrades to Vokeys Road and paving in Harbour Main-Whitbourne to help address road quality and maintenance issues. This project is complete.

$158,000 for a storm sewer system and road upgrades on Massey Drive in the District of Humber East. This project is near completion and was necessary to eliminate ongoing storm water damage to the existing infrastructure.

$89,700 to Deer Lake for paving and sidewalk work on Morey Avenue.

$173,000 for upgrades and paving of Gordons Road in Terra Nova-Glovertown. This project is complete.

The Municipal Capital Works Program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the Provincial Government and municipalities, and is designed to provide financial assistance to improve infrastructure for municipalities in the province. In 2006-2007, the provincial portion of the Municipal Capital Works Program totaled $34.5 million. The Provincial Government has also committed $85 million under the 2005-08 Multi-Year Capital Works Program.

"Every initiative that we support through the Municipal Capital Works Program, regardless of how big or small, has an immediate positive impact," added Minister Byrne. "Every dollar counts and, as a government, we want to ensure that construction and upgrades promote safe and sustainable communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."
