Newfoundland and Labrador to Change Daylight Saving Time in 2007

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador will be adopting extended daylight saving time beginning in the spring of 2007, the Honourable Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal Affairs announced today.

Daylight Saving Time will be extended by one month, beginning one minute after 12 a.m. on the second Sunday in March and will end one minute after 12 a.m. on the first Sunday in November. In 2007, the dates will be March 11 and November 4, respectively.

"This change will ensure that the daylight saving time pattern is consistent with other provinces in Canada and with the United States which will extend daylight saving time in the same manner," stated Minister Byrne. "It is essential to be in sync with the rest of the country, and a coordinated change will be important to business, transportation and communication needs. The extension of daylight saving time will ensure that services such as banking, travel, and shipping will not be impacted, and will benefit public safety and energy usage."

Daylight saving time is governed by the Standard Time Act which was amended in the fall 2006 session of the House of Assembly to allow this change.
