Recreation Landmark in Harbour Grace to Receive
Upgrades through Municipal Capital Works Program

The Provincial Government has approved a cost-shared Municipal Capital Works project valued at $453,500 for the upgrade of the S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium in the Town of Harbour Grace.

The S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium, built in 1958, is a 30,000 square foot building that houses the primary ice surface for the Harbour Grace area. Upgrades to the facility will extend the useful life of the building through much needed roofing renovations.

"The S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium is a landmark of the Town of Harbour Grace and this project will ensure the continuation of its operation as a safe and reliable venue for residents interested in pursuing healthy and active lifestyles," says the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "Recreation facilities that are both accommodating and accessible to all Newfoundland and Labradorians are important to our province."

Government recognizes that municipalities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador are experiencing a variety of infrastructure pressures ranging from the need to upgrade existing recreation infrastructure, to replacement. In 2007-08, provincial funding for recreation is estimated at $11.7 million, with a significant portion being earmarked to upgrade or replace existing facilities in rural communities throughout the province.

"The S. W. Moores Memorial Stadium has been a focal point in the lives of numerous individuals from my district and the surrounding area, for events such as hockey and figure skating as well as the Annual Trinity-Conception Fall Fair," said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, MHA for the District of Carbonear Harbour Grace. "I am pleased to see the announcement and construction of this upgrading coincides with the 50th anniversary of the stadium in 2008."

The Municipal Capital Works Program provides cost-shared support to municipalities to develop a wide range of municipal infrastructure, including recreation. In 2007-08 the Municipal Capital Works Program is valued at $34.2 million. The program supports infrastructure that builds strong rural and urban communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
