Minister Meets With Provincial and Territorial
Counterparts During National Aboriginal Womens Summit

The Provincial Government continues to take advantage of every opportunity to move forward on the issues facing Aboriginal peoples in Newfoundland and Labrador and indeed the entire country.

The Honourable Tom Rideout, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, met yesterday with his provincial and territorial counterparts while attending the National Aboriginal Womens Summit in Corner Brook.

"I am extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to hold an informal meeting with all of my counterparts who were able to attend the summit," said Minister Rideout. "All Aboriginal groups throughout Canada face similar challenges, and it is therefore of great benefit for me to discuss potential solutions to these challenges with other jurisdictions in the country. Yesterdays meeting was a great opportunity to do just that."

Minister Rideout was joined by the Honourable Paul Okalik, Premier of Nunavut and Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, the Honourable Joe Handley, Premier of the Northwest Territories and Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs, and the Honourable Joan Beatty, Minister of Northern Affairs for the Government of Saskatchewan.

Minister Rideout noted that he also reiterated the Provincial Governments support of the Kelowna Accord, and the need for all provinces, territories and Aboriginal groups across Canada to come together in support of this historic agreement.

"I am pleased that I was afforded the opportunity to discuss with my counterparts the challenges that we experience here in our province, as well as the many successes that we have achieved," continued the minister. "In addition, it was equally as beneficial to hear from the other ministers in these same areas. It was also beneficial to follow up with Premier Okalik regarding the seal harvest and other issues discussed when I led a delegation to Nunavut in February."

Minister Rideout added that the discussions helped to strengthen the ministers commitment to work together to develop the full potential of Aboriginal communities.
