Provincial and Nunatsiavut Governments Addressing Gas Shortage in Rigolet

The Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs and the Nunatsiavut Government have collaborated to assist the community of Rigolet, which has been without gasoline for almost two weeks now.

The Department of Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs and the Nunatsiavut Government shared the $12,000 cost of transporting 58 drums of gas, which was flown into the community by Innu Mikun airlines yesterday.

The Honourable John Hickey, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs, said his department is pleased to be of assistance.

"As soon as this request came forward we were quick to respond to this urgent need and more than willing to do so," said Minister Hickey.

Darryl Shiwak, Nunatsiavut Government Minister of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and Member for Rigolet said, "I am extremely pleased with the joint effort from the Nunatsiavut Government and the Provincial Government to provide a short term solution to the gas problem in my community. It is essential for Rigolet residents to have gas for transportation, especially at this time of year."

The gas supply flown into Rigolet should be adequate for the community until ice conditions subside and an oil tanker can arrive.
