Government provides Electoral District Boundaries Commission Report to HOA Members

The Department of Justice has released the Electoral District Boundaries Commission report to members of the House of Assembly through the Office of the Speaker, the Honourable Tom Osborne, Minister of Justice announced today.

"Government is recommending acceptance of the commission's report and it was important that members be aware of the contents of the report," said Minister Osborne.

"Due to the fact that the House is not currently in session, the government has taken the necessary steps to release the report to members through the Office of the Speaker."

The report was submitted to the Minster of Justice on November 30, 2006, and was submitted to the Lieutenant Governor in Council in accordance with Electoral Boundaries Act.

The commission was composed of retired Court of Appeal Justice John O'Neill, chair, appointed by the Chief Justice of Newfoundland and Labrador, and commissioners Robert Aylward - vice-chair, Julie Eveleigh, Roger Grimes, and Cle Newhook appointed by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Harvey Hodder, on March 13, 2006. In accordance with Section 3 of the Electoral Boundaries Act, the commission was appointed to review and determine the province's electoral boundaries.

The commission was charged with the responsibility of preparing a report to the Minister of Justice setting out its recommendations for the division of the province into 48 districts, the description of the boundaries and the name to be given to each district.

The report will be made available next week online //www.gov.nl.ca/just/publications.htm to the general public when it has been received by all members of the House of Assembly.
