Codroy Valley Tourism Operators to Promote Regions Attractions

A tourism business network on Newfoundlands southwest coast has received funding from the Provincial Government. The Codroy Valley Vacations Business Network has received $6,710 from the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Developments Business and Market Development Program to help establish a local awareness campaign and develop a website in order to attract visitors to the Codroy Valley.

"Businesses working together to a common end are one of the best ways to create innovation in an industry," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "I congratulate the Codroy Valley Vacations Business Network on undertaking this joint venture to market their region and raise awareness of the importance of tourism to the province."

The network, which began with six tourism-related businesses from the Codroy Valley has grown to 12 since 2000. The organizations goal is to develop the areas wetlands and attract bird-watching clubs. The wetlands of the Grand Codroy Estuary are home to the endangered Piping Plover, of which there are only 500 in Atlantic Canada and fewer than 5,000 worldwide, as well as the Loon, the Murre, the Canada Goose, the Pine Grosbeak, the Great Blue Heron, and the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

"More than 400,000 visitors travel through our region from the CN Ferry at Port aux Basques each year," said Alice Keeping, president, Codroy Valley Vacations Business Network. "We want to run a local awareness campaign on the economic importance of tourism and of encouraging visitors to stay in our area. In addition, our new website will allow us to show visitors what tourism attractions we have before they arrive, and link them to all the tourism operators in the area."

The Business and Market Development Program is designed to provide not-for-profit organizations, entrepreneurs and expanding small businesses with matching funding to help them acquire the necessary expertise to pursue new business ideas and new markets for their products or services. The $1 million program is intended to support new growth opportunities in the economy, such as value-added manufacturing activities and export-oriented opportunities.
