Corner Brook Stream Secures
Federal and Provincial Support for Growth

The Corner Brook Stream Development Corporation (CBSDC) will continue to develop the citys tourism infrastructure thanks to a joint investment of more than $450,000 by the Government of Canada and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The funding was announced today by the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence (DND) and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.

"Through projects such as this, the Government of Canada is getting things done for the people of Corner Brook," said Minister Hearn. "The City of Corner Brook, and the entire west coast of Newfoundland, have much to offer outdoor enthusiasts. This funding will allow the Corner Brook Stream Development Corporation to further develop the citys outdoor attractions and to market the city as a premier tourism destination."

"Hiking and walking trails are important attractions in terms of the tourism products Newfoundland and Labrador has to offer and just as important to our resident population," said Minister Trevor Taylor. "The Provincial Government recognizes the important role that tourism plays in the province and is confident that providing the necessary resources to initiatives of this nature contribute to the creation of vibrant communities."

The project has three major components: the re-development of the Captain Cook Commemorative Site, a marketing initiative which includes the development of a promotional strategy and materials, and the continued development of trails and linkages within the city to showcase Corner Brooks natural spaces.

"The continued development of our trail system will link major tourist attractions in the region, help to re-vitalize the downtown area, and by doing so, position the City of Corner Brook and its downtown as a primary tourist destination," said Brent Humphries, executive director of the CBSDC.

Mr. Humphries noted that the development will complement the work currently being done by the Western Newfoundland Destination Marketing Organization, which is in the process of implementing a tourism marketing campaign for the west coast. The CBSDC will ensure that its promotional strategies and materials complement those of the Western Newfoundland Destination Marketing Organization. "As a result, the west coast region of the province will be cross-promoted through marketing materials that contain common themes and messages," added Mr. Humphries.

The CBSDC is an incorporated not-for-profit organization mandated as an umbrella group to oversee all activities along the Corner Brook Stream corridor. It ensures the protection of the stream itself as well as the surrounding greenbelt.  Formally incorporated in 1995, the CBSDC has developed and maintains many kilometres of walking and hiking trails and related infrastructure along the Corner Brook Stream.

Government of Canada funding provided for this project includes $354,725 from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency. Provincial funding includes $100,000 from the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.
