Conception Bay South Walking, Wetlands, and Wildlife Project Receives Funding

The Town of Conception Bay South has received $47,330 from the Regional/ Sectoral Diversification Fund to help fund the Kelligrews Community Environmental Tourism Project which targets visitors with environmental interests.

"This project was one of the six priority projects identified in the Conception Bay South Tourism, Marketing and Infrastructure Development Plan," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "People come to Newfoundland and Labrador to learn and to gather new experiences. This project will appeal to visitors who enjoy wetlands and wildlife and help develop the local tourism infrastructure."

The $199,000 project covers a distance of one kilometre and includes installation of a shoreline boardwalk, development of new rest areas, installation of signage and interpretative kiosks, and construction of an outdoor environmental education classroom on the shoreline of Kelligrews Pond.

"Increasingly we are attracting discerning visitors who have an appreciation of our unspoiled scenery and vibrant wildlife," said Terry French, MHA for Conception Bay South. "This project will appeal to visitors and residents who enjoy outdoor activities, wetland education, walking, and bird-watching. I congratulate the project partners for undertaking this worthwhile project"

The Kelligrews Community Environmental Tourism Project is the result of a partnership involving the Town of Conception Bay South, the Kelligrews Ecological Enhancement Program, and the Conception Bay South Parks Commissions. The objective is to enhance visitors experiences and lengthen the duration of their stay. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2007.

The Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund is a $5 million fund of the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and a component of the provinces Comprehensive Regional Diversification Strategy. The fund provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
