Province Funds Cultural Tourism Projects on Burin Peninsula

The Provincial Government is investing $117,000 into two projects on the Burin Peninsula that highlight culture and help boost tourism in the area. The Lighthouse Theatre at Grand Bank has received funding for theatre improvements and the Greater Lamaline Area Development Association has received funding for interpretive signs from the provinces Regional Sectoral Diversification Fund.

"The Burin Peninsula is rich in volunteer groups that are working hard to preserve their history and culture and develop new industries, particularly tourism," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "Our Marystown office works closely with such groups to help them realize their goals. I am pleased that we have been able to assist with these worthwhile projects."

Lighthouse Productions Inc. of Grand Banks is a not-for-profit theatre company that develops and produces Newfoundland and Labrador theatrical works and has built a significant following of local residents and visitors from all parts of the province and abroad. The company is receiving $100,000 to improve its theatre through seating improvements and technological enhancements.

The Greater Lamaline Area Development Association is a volunteer economic development group that has received $17,444 to help with production of a series of roadside interpretive panels on the 1929 tsunami and to assist with upgrading of the Lamaline Heritage Museum and the Lawn Heritage Museum. Interpretive signs located in well-landscaped areas, together with local museums, often improve tourists experiences and help to lengthen their stays.

The Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund is a $5 million fund of the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development and a component of the provinces Comprehensive Regional Diversification Strategy. The fund provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
