Clarenville Nordic Ski Club to Upgrade Facilities

The Clarenville Nordic Ski Club will improve its ski trails and facilities thanks to an investment of $159,491 made by Canadas New Government, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and a further $61,000 from the provincial Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development.

"Canadas New Government is working with its partners to get things done for the people of the Clarenville area," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of ACOA. "Our investment of nearly $160,000 in this project will enhance the tourism and recreation infrastructure in the community and strengthen the economic development capacity of the area."

Specifically, this project will involve three major activities: expansion and improvement of the cross-country ski trail system adjacent to the White Hills Resort; upgrades to an existing snow grooming machine; and installation of a lighting system along a popular night-time skiing area known as Harrys Loop.

"These improvements will help increase membership and ensure the long-term viability of the Clarenville Nordic Ski Club," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "This project supports the regions winter tourism strategy to develop the area as a destination of choice for recreational enthusiasts, and encourages greater revenues for accommodations, food and beverage establishments in the area, as well as other service and retail businesses."

Improvements and expansions to the existing trail system will include the construction and installation of signage and trail markers; cutting and removal of trees, stumps and brush in areas where trails are to be developed; reuse of downed trees on the trail bed to create a level surface; installation of galvanized steel culverts; and construction of small bridges where needed.

The investment by Canadas New Government is through ACOAs Innovative Communities Fund (ICF) which works in partnership with Atlantic communities and stakeholders to build on the strengths of communities and provide the tools needed to identify opportunities available for their sustainable economic growth.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $61,000 from the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development through the departments Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund which provides non-repayable contributions for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
