James Ryan General Store in Elliston to be Restored
Thanks to Investments from Federal and Provincial Governments

Tourism Elliston Inc. is restoring the James Ryan General Store as a tourism venue thanks to investments of more than $170,000 by Canadas New Government and over $60,000 by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Canadas New Government is working with its partners to get things done for the people of Elliston and the surrounding area," said the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Regional Minister for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources Social Development Canada (HRSD). "This investment of more than $170,000 will help enhance the tourism infrastructure in the community and strengthen the economic development capacity of the area."

The James Ryan General Store is a heritage building in the Town of Elliston. Its restoration will build on the existing cluster of tourism attractions on the Bonavista Peninsula which includes the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, the Elliston Root Cellars, the Matthew replica, the Ryan Premises National Historic Site, and Coaker Foundation.

"Completing this restoration work will create another anchor attraction for the Elliston area," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "Tourism Elliston Incorporated has done a remarkable job of creating sustainable tourism developments in the region, and this newest addition will further enhance the visitor experience in the community."

This project will involve the interior restoration of the existing building to include a general store, an artisan centre, an interpretation centre on the second floor and a lecture theatre.

"This project is in keeping with our Heritage Development Plan which uses our heritage resources to stimulate the tourism industry," said Colleen Duffett of Tourism Elliston Inc. "This support from the federal and provincial governments will allow us to restore the interior of this building and complement the restoration we did on the exterior in 2005."

ACOA is providing $80,465 for this project under its Innovative Communities Fund (ICF). HRSD is providing $89,942 through Service Canada under the Job Creation Partnerships (JCP) component of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is providing $60,557 through the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Developments Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund.
