Metal Fabricator to Earn Higher Certification to Compete Internationally

A metal fabrication company in eastern Newfoundland has received funding to upgrade its welding standards that will allow it to bid on international contracts. AMEIL Constructors Limited of Come by Chance has received $25,000 from the Provincial Governments Small Business and Market Development Program.

"A number of major construction projects are proposed for eastern Newfoundland including a new oil refinery in Come by Chance, a trans-shipment facility in Arnolds Cove, and a nickel processing facility in Long Harbour," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "I congratulate AMEIL Constructors on having the foresight to obtain this additional certification which will enable it to bid on new projects here and abroad."

"AMEIL Constructors was formed in 2005 to provide fabrication and construction services to the oil storage and refinery industry at Come by Chance using Canadian and provincial standards," said Fred Edwards, AMEILs president. "However, to bid on national and international work we also require certification by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This will allow us to perform boiler and pressure vessel fabrication here in Newfoundland and Labrador in accordance with these international standards. The demand for this product is currently high in both the southern United States and western Canada."

AMEIL Constructors employs up to 40 people during its peak season who work in industrial pipe fabrication, heavy transport, and industrial field construction. AMEIL will use the funding to revise its quality management system documentation to include the ASME Code Symbol Stamp and undergo a review by ASME engineers in New York. The $25,000 funding will contribute to the total cost of the process which will be $70,000.

The Small Business and Market Development Program is designed to provide new entrepreneurs and expanding small businesses with funding to help them acquire the necessary expertise to pursue new business ideas and new markets for their products or services. The $1 million program is intended to support new growth opportunities in the economy, such as value-added manufacturing activities and export-oriented opportunities.
