Local Businesses Head to Iceland to Develop Export Markets

Twelve companies from Corner Brook, Deer Lake, Grand Falls-Windsor, St. Johns, Trinity and Whitbourne will travel to Iceland on June 2 on a trade mission. The mission will run from June 3 - 7 and is a follow-up to a November 2006 mission.

"Entering new export markets and building business relationships is seldom a one-time event," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "These companies had some success on their first visit to Iceland last November, and now they are returning to build upon that success. We hope to develop a long-term trading relationship with our northern neighbour."

This mission is being led by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development in partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization for Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE), the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).

Iceland imports a large quantity of products and requires high-quality, niche-market products and services that this province can provide. Icelanders have been visiting Newfoundland and Labrador in increasing numbers in recent years to purchase goods.

The companies on this trade mission represent a number of sectors including marine technology, building, and consumer products. Three days of business meetings have been arranged. The department has retained the services of an experienced business matchmaker to ensure that the visiting businesses are paired with similar Iceland companies to maximize the probability of doing business.

The 12 companies traveling on the mission are: K.S.A.B Cabinets, Corner Brook; Q.H. North America, and Eastwood Forest Products Inc., both of Deer Lake; CJ Enterprises N.L. Ltd., Grand Falls-Windsor; Ewe Design, Trinity; Markland Cottage Winery Ltd., Whitbourne; Classic Woodwork Ltd., and Western Hydraulic 2000 Ltd. both of Mount Pearl; Northstar Technical Inc., Dray Media, PF Collins, and Jigs Personalized Puzzles Inc., all of St. Johns.
