Government Seeks Nominations for
Newfoundland and Labrador Exporter of the Year Award

The Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development invites nominations for the 2007 Newfoundland and Labrador Exporter of the Year Award. Three finalists will be chosen from among the nominees and one will be named Newfoundland and Labrador Exporter of the Year at a lunch to be held at the Delta Hotel on March 9.

"The number of exporting companies grows yearly, headed by some of our most innovative and creative business people," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "Many of these companies have earned worldwide recognition for their first-rate products and services. Their achievements help grow our economy and build a solid reputation for us in the international arena. That is why it is important to recognize the accomplishments of exporters who compete and succeed in the global marketplace."

A company may be nominated by its peers, and individuals may nominate their own company. To nominate a company, please complete a nomination form available online at www.gov.nl.ca/intrd/exportawards before February 9, 2007. Companies that are nominated will be notified and asked to apply directly.

To be eligible for nomination, companies must be registered in Newfoundland and Labrador and have been exporting goods or services outside Canada for at least three years. The nominees will be evaluated on Newfoundland and Labrador content; the range of market penetration; the companys ability to hold market share in the face of strong external competition; the ratio of export sales to total sales; the uniqueness of the companys products and services; the extent to which the company has been innovative in its approach; and the level of research and development leading to the expansion of the companys products and/or services.

Finalists will be selected through an assessment process involving the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) - Newfoundland and Labrador Division; the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Technology Industries (Nati); the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Industries Association (NEIA); the Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association (NOIA); the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE); and provincial and federal departments responsible for export development.

Beginning January 8, advertisements will appear in newspapers across the province calling for nominations for the Newfoundland and Labrador Export Awards. For more information, visit our Web site at www.gov.nl.ca/intrd/exportawards or e-mail exportawards@gov.nl.ca.
