Provincial Government Supports Junior Achievement Initiatives

Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador (JA) provides youth in the province with the opportunity to develop and enhance business skills through their business education programs. The Provincial Government believes in the development of young entrepreneurs and is supporting JA with a grant this year of $7,500. JA is using the funds to complete the development of a training guide and resource package for volunteers involved in the Titan and Dream Big programs.

"Junior Achievement provides young people with the opportunity to explore the world of business and to embrace entrepreneurship," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "The $7,500 grant will benefit future junior achievers who participant in the Titan and Dream Big initiatives."

Dream Big and JA Titan are relatively new programs to Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador. Both programs are delivered to high school students. Dream Big is a program of self-discovery. It focuses on character, integrity and hard work to help students set goals and define a vision for success. The JA Titan places students in an interactive web-based business simulation.

"This partnership with government helps build this provinces greatest asset our youth, and it gives us an opportunity to ensure that we have all the necessary resources in place for the volunteers prior to program delivery," said Christine Caines, president and CEO, Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador. "We are excited to move forward together on this project."

The Provincial Government is committed to providing youth with access to community-level supports and services. The partnership with JA will enable more young people to access their business education programs. The Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment provides over $3 million in funding for approximately 70 youth-serving, community-based agencies throughout the province.

Since 1985, Junior Achievement of Newfoundland and Labrador has made a positive contribution to the province. It has helped approximately 70,000 youth discover the world of business. JA programs are delivered by a network of volunteers through over 100 schools across the province. Junior Achievement is an international organization which operates in over 100 countries worldwide.
