Province Supports Dunfield Park Homework Haven Program

The children and youth of Dunfield Park in Corner Brook can continue to take advantage of a highly successful Homework Haven program offered through their community centre. The Provincial Government is continuing its support with a $13,700 operating grant for 2007-08.

"This Homework Haven program provides a secure and supportive environment to help young people with their homework assignments," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland Labrador Housing. "This grant will enable students in the Dunfield Park area to achieve academic success and reach their full potential."

The Dunfield Park Homework Haven program is in its 10th year of operation. Homework Haven is a volunteer-based initiative that provides after-school homework support to children and youth in junior high and high school. The program offers dedicated access to a tutor under the guidance of a teacher. It is a valuable resource for local schools and parents. It serves approximately 300 youth in the Dunfield Park community while providing further support to over 1,000 young people in the Corner Brook area. Last year, the Homework Haven program assisted an average of 38 youth each day.

"I am pleased to see that the young residents of Dunfield Park continue to enjoy academic success by participating in the Homework Haven program," said the Honourable Premier Danny Williams, MHA for Humber West. "Our government is firmly committed to meeting the needs of youth with a broad range of programs and services accessible within their communities."

The Dunfield Park Community Centre promotes the health and social well-being of families. It provides area residents with social, educational, employment, and career development opportunities. The centre offers recreational and wellness programs within the community. Newfoundland Labrador Housing (NLH) owns and maintains the centre. NLH provides annual core funding to assist Dunfield Park with these vital community development activities.
