The Government of Canada Helps People in Northwestern
Newfoundland and Labrador to F
ind Work

The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and Minister Responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today announced that the Government of Canada will provide funding to help individuals in northwestern Newfoundland gain work experience, explore career options, and find work.

"The Government of Canada is committed to creating the best educated, most skilled, and most flexible work force in the world," said Minister Hearn. "These projects will help Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who face barriers to employment get the skills, knowledge, and experience they need to find work."

"Participants in these projects will gain a better understanding of their options in the labour market," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment for Newfoundland and Labrador. "This funding will help those who are looking to start a small business, gain work experience, or access local employment services."

The over $700,000 in funding for the projects is provided through three programs.

Under the Employment Assistance Services program:

  • The Humber Community YMCA in Corner Brook will receive $284,072;
  • The Emerald Business Employment Corporation in Baie Verte will receive $137,377;
  • The Green Bay Community Employment Corporation in Springdale will receive $84,307; and
  • The Supported Employment Deer Lake Extended Regions will receive $53,084.
  • Through the Job Creation Partnership program:

  • The Town of Cow Head will receive $22,200;
  • The Springdale Heritage Society will receive $12,000; and
  • The Aurora Nordic Ski Club in St. Anthony will receive $11,723.
  • Through the Self-Employment Assistance program:

  • The Emerald Business Development Corporation in Baie Verte will receive $84,049; and,
  • The Nortip Development Corporation in Plum Point will receive $49,512 in funding.
  • These organizations will help more than 2,000 unemployed individuals-including Aboriginal people, youth, and people with developmental disabilities-prepare for, find, and keep good jobs. The employment services being offered include needs assessment, employment counselling, career-planning advice, job-search assistance, work experience, and business-plan development. These projects are examples of the many services funded through Service Canada to help people find jobs.

    Service Canada brings Government of Canada services and benefits together in a single delivery network. It provides Canadians with one-stop service they can access however they choose-by phone at 1 800 O-Canada, on the Internet at servicecanada.gc.ca, or in person at Service Canada Centres across the country.

    BACKGROUNDER

    Employment Assistance Services

    The Employment Assistance Services (EAS) program supports projects aimed at helping insured participants gain the skills they need to find meaningful employment. Employment Assistance Services include providing clients with information about the labour market, help preparing r�sum�s, career-planning services, employment counselling, diagnostic assessment, help with job-search skills, job-finding clubs, and job-placement services.

  • The Humber Community YMCA will help 350 young people develop self-sufficiency strategies and employment plans.
  • The Emerald Business Employment Corporation will provide employment-related services to about 1,800 unemployed individuals to help them find and maintain employment.
  • The Green Bay Community Employment Corporation will provide employment services to 24 unemployed individuals with developmental disabilities, and will help them develop employment plans.
  • The Supported Employment Deer Lake Extended Regions will provide employment-related services to 24 individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Job Creation Partnerships

    The Job Creation Partnerships employment benefit supports projects aimed at giving insured participants opportunities to gain meaningful work experience. At the end of the projects, clients will have recent work experience to add to their r�sum�s. This experience, together with the networking opportunities available while on a project, increases participants� chances of successfully finding long-term employment.

  • The Town of Cow Head will give four unemployed individuals work experience through a project to complete the interior of the newly-constructed ambulance/fire department.
  • The Springdale Heritage Society will give two unemployed individuals work experience through a project to renovate and upgrade the local heritage centre.
  • The Aurora Nordic Ski Club will give six unemployed individuals work experience through a project to extend a local cross-country touring and racing trail.
  • Self Employment Assistance

    The Self Employment Assistance program supports projects aimed at helping insured participants gain the skills they need to become self-employed. Self Employment Assistance activities include providing clients with information about the labour market, and helping them develop business concepts and business plans.

  • The Emerald Business Development Corporation will provide consultations to 40 clients to help them become self-employed.
  • The Nortip Development Corporation will assess the business concepts of 40 individuals in the Plum Point area, and will help them develop and implement their business plans.
