Government Supports YMCA Youth Programs
The Provincial Government is helping young people
succeed with $40,000 in funding this year to support programs and
services at three Y centres in the province. The YMCA-YWCA of the
Northeast Avalon and the YMCA of Humber Community each received a grant
of $15,000, while $10,000 has been provided to the YMCA of Exploits
Valley.
"The YMCA has consistently offered a high level of
service and commitment to youth development in our community," said the
Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and
Employment. "Our government is pleased to support the three YMCA centres
in the province and their tradition of successfully engaging young
people through access to health, fitness and recreation, and personal
development programs."
There is a diversity of youth-focused programs and
services available through the three YMCA centres in the province.
Within a range of program offerings, youth in the Exploits Valley area
can take advantage of swimming lessons and summer day camps while the
YMCA of Humber Community provides access to health, fitness and
recreation, childcare and youth employment services. In turn, the
YMCA-YWCA of the Northeast Avalon offers Go Girls Go to improve personal
self-esteem through physical activity and the Y Leadership - Level I and
II program to develop an adolescent's ability to make a contribution to
the community.
The Department of Human Resources, Labour and
Employment provides over $3 million in funding for youth-serving,
community-based agencies throughout the province. The Y centres are
using the funding to develop new programs, expand existing services and
meet operational costs. For further information on the YMCA-YWCA and its
programs and services please visit www.ymca.ca.
