The Provincial Government continues to recognize the
need to ensure that a variety of programs and services are made
available to youth in the province. This year, $54,000 is being provided
to enable over 1,700 young people to participate in a variety of
sponsored activities, offered through five youth centre clubs located in
Placentia-Dunville, St. Albans, Englee, Labrador City, and Wabush.
This year, the department is providing over $3 million
in funding for youth-serving, community-based agencies throughout the
province. This includes approximately $2 million for the Community Youth
Network, $609,000 for grants to youth organizations, and $500,000 to
strategically support youth in their pursuit of post-secondary education
and employment.
"It is well-recognized that communities are
strengthened when meaningful supports are made available to young
people, and active services are provided on the ground to encourage
individual development and increase the opportunity for success in all
of lifes endeavours," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of
Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "This government understands
that support for these five youth centres, and for other youth-serving
agencies, means young people can gain the respect they deserve and make
a real contribution to the communities in which they live. This is a
source of pride for everyone."
The five youth centre clubs offer a variety of
programs and services. These include youth wellness programs, access to
fitness classes and physical activities, awareness and prevention
programs targeting violence, crime and drug use, computer and internet
access, as well as tutoring and employment opportunities. The youth
centre clubs operate with a combination of paid staff and volunteers
under the direction of a dedicated board of directors. The clubs serve
the needs of young people between the ages of 12 and 20.
