Provincial Government Expands Support for Boys and Girls Clubs

The Provincial Government strengthened its commitment to children and youth with a $277,800 investment in 2007-08 to support the work of nine Boys and Girls Clubs in the province. This is a $115,600 increase over the original annual operating grant for 2006-07.

"The Boys and Girls Clubs in Newfoundland and Labrador help over 3,500 young people between the ages of five and 18 discover and develop their potential through participation in meaningful programs and activities that encourage leadership and personal development," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment.

"Boys and Girls Clubs across the province appreciate the support from the Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, both in the past and in particular, for the increase in funding to our clubs in 2007," said Jackie McIsaac, provincial coordinator, Boys and Girls Clubs. "The extra support will enable our clubs to expand programs related to wellness, the arts and education, and also provide an opportunity to develop new programs, especially for the teen population."

The Boys and Girls Clubs operate sites in Bell Island, Botwood, Buchans, Gander, Norris Arm, St. Anthony, Upper Island Cove and St. Johns (Mundy Pond and Buckmasters Circle). The clubs offer programs that encourage physical activity, health, nutrition, leadership, growth, empowerment, life skills, and the arts. These programs are available to children and youth during after-school hours, and on evenings and weekends.

"Our government supports the Boys and Girls Clubs because the organization offers a safe and nurturing environment that enables children and youth to grow and achieve greater self-reliance," said Minister Skinner. "This makes a positive difference in their lives, while strengthening families and society as a whole."
