Government Announces Expansion of
Career Information Resource Centres Throughout the Province

Continuing with the Provincial Governments commitment to helping residents of Newfoundland and Labrador better understand and join todays dynamic workforce, the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, announced today in Corner Brook the expansion of Career Information Resource Centres (CIRC) throughout the province, as supported with an investment of $979,600 in Budget 2007.

"It is a pleasure to be in Corner Brook for this exciting announcement of the expansion of Career Information Resource Centres in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Skinner. "We have two centres currently operating that have been extremely successful and plans to expand this service to more regions of the province are well underway."

Community locations for new CIRC offices have been identified as: Carbonear, Clarenville, Corner Brook, Grand FallsWindsor, Happy ValleyGoose Bay and Stephenville.

"Having this important resource on the ground and visible within our communities is critical to the advancement of our workforce," continued Minister Skinner. "As a government, we recognize the challenges faced by people entering, and those currently in, the workforce. Career Information Resource Centres are an important tool for those who intend on making the most of their experience in our labour market."

The CIRC provides services to a broad client group with direct access to an array of tools, professional support and counseling services. The services offered through the CIRC are open to the general public, persons receiving income support, along with new and recurring job seekers. It is also a resource base within the community for professionals engaged in guidance and career counseling. Businesses and employers can use the services of CIRC to attain information on labour market trends, receive assistance with human resource planning and recruitment, and meet potential employees.

The establishment of CIRC complements other initiatives of the Williams Government such as the LMIworks Web site (www.lmiworks.nl.ca/) that provides up-to-date and relevant career and employment information, the Skills Task Force and the hiring of 10 new career information officers to work with teachers, guidance counselors and students in the secondary system. These initiatives demonstrate a commitment from the Provincial Government to ensure residents have the most up-to-date information possible when they make choices related to their careers. Budget 2007 allocated $3.9 million towards the expansion of career and employment services, including $979,600 for the expanded delivery of CIRC within the province, and an additional $2.8 million in support of the Skills Task Force to improve the responsiveness of the skills training and apprenticeship system in the province.

"I encourage everyone with an interest in furthering their careers, entering the workforce, expanding or starting a business, or those just curious about what our government has to offer, to visit our CIRC sites and see the wealth of information that is available. I am confident that everyone who visits a CIRC will be impressed with the facility, its experienced and knowledgeable staff and the success stories happening on a daily basis."
