Public Advisory: Food Safety Tips During a Power Outage

The departments of Government Services and Health and Community Services advise the public in the Bonavista Peninsula region to be mindful of food safety during the power outage as a result of this weekends winter storm. Perishable food can spoil very quickly in the event of a power outage so caution should be used when dealing with perishable food.

In general, during any emergency situation, the public should carefully inspect all food items and not eat any food which may be unsafe. A key point to remember is when in doubt, throw it out. Check food in refrigerators and freezers for signs of spoilage, and ask retailers and restaurateurs to explain how food has been kept safe during power failures.

Specifically, freezing stops the growth of bacteria in perishable foods. An upright or chest freezer should keep food frozen for about 24 hours during a power failure, if the freezer is kept closed. A refrigerator will keep food cool for four to six hours. Put ice, if available, in the refrigerator, or place food in an ice box or cooler with ice to help keep perishable foods temporarily chilled.

In the event that the power outage lasts longer, as in the case of this outage, if possible transport the food to a friends or family members freezer if they have power.

Discard any thawed food that has remained at room temperature for two or more hours and any food that has an obvious strange colour or odour. However, food contaminated with bacteria does not necessarily smell or appear spoiled so if there is any doubt to whether the food has been contaminated, throw it out.

Food that still contains ice crystals or feels refrigerator-cold can be re-frozen. If raw food has leaked during thawing, clean and disinfect the areas the food has touched. Do not reuse wash cloths until they have been cleaned and disinfected. Make sure that all foods are stored in a way that protects them from pets, insects and rodents.

If anyone affected by the power outage has any concerns or questions on food safety, please contact the Government Service Centre in Clarenville at 709-466-4060.
