Consumer Advisory: Consumers Warned of Uncertified Electrical Product

The Department of Government Services is advising consumers of a product which is not certified to be sold in Canada and could have potential electrical safety hazards.

A fibreglass reinforced acrylic shower room unit has been imported and sold in the province. Electrical inspectors with the department in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Corner Brook first became aware of the units which are being imported directly from China. However, they are available on the Internet and at least one in the province was purchased on e-Bay.

The units, bearing the CE logo, are 39.5" by 39.5" and come with any or all of the following accessories: FM radio, computer control panel, hands-free telephone answering system, ceiling lamp, ventilation fan, storage shelves, high quality speaker system and a fog free mirror. This product is not approved for sale in Canada and cannot be sold in Newfoundland and Labrador without the approval of a certification agency recognized by the Canadian Standards Association or the Standards Council of Canada.

Because this product is not approved, it may present an electrical hazard to individuals or property. Any supplier in the province known to sell these shower units has been asked to remove this and any unapproved electrical product from sale immediately and to issue a recall of the product.

For further information on this electrical product, please call 709-729-2860.
