Consumer Advisory: Consumers Warned of Products
with Potential Electrical Safety Hazards

The Department of Government Services is advising consumers of two separate products which have potential electrical safety concerns.

Electrical safety issues have been found with non-certified animated lamps. These lamps are sold as either "Aquarium", "Living Dolphins" or "Zoo Animals" animated lamps and can be found at some bargain retailers in the province. In some parts of Canada, these products have overheated and posed potential fire hazards although there is no known occurrence in this province.

These lamps were manufactured in China, but have not been tested by a recognized certification agency and do not bear a certification mark. By law, electrical products sold in Newfoundland and Labrador must bear a certification mark recognized by the Canadian Standards Association. Otherwise, they must be removed from store shelves. Electrical safety bulletins are being distributed to retailers in the province to instruct them to remove this product from their shelves.

The department advises consumers to stop using this product immediately and, where possible, return it to the store from which it was bought.

In addition, the department is also advising consumers of a voluntary recall of Toshiba AC adapters sold with portable DVD players. The AC adapters can fail causing the portable DVD player to overheat, posing a burn hazard to consumers. This adapter was sold with the Toshiba portable DVD player model SD-P1600. This product was sold in electronics stores from January 2005 through April 2006. For more information on this recall please visit www.tacp.com.
